Abstract: Wireless Sensor network (WSN) is an emerging technology for devices which require low cost, low data rate, and low power consuming, communication medium. The protocol used in WSN is IEEE 802.15.4 which defines the physical and mac layer rest of layers are application oriented and are defined by user. This technology has many applications in field of military, medical, health care, agriculture, forest etc. There are many challenges to design of WSN like auto configuration, auto healing, low cost, low power consuming etc. These devices are basically battery operated and require to operate for long time because in some application once deployed cannot be replaced. Therefore they require to have a very optimal design of protocol stack to extend their life. In present state-of-art these devices are very costly and are application oriented. To make them used by general public in India (especially farmers) low cost devices are required. And should come with open hardware and software so that they could be easily used with in any application with very minimal configuration requirement.
